The Institute of Archaeology provides archaeological opportunities to all and plays a major role in furthering the understanding of archaeological and historical past of the Indian subcontinent. Its aim is to remain in the forefront of international research in archaeological sciences, besides promoting best practice in the management of cultural heritage and in the care and preservation of archaeological artifacts. It Interacts with State Departments, Museums, Universities and other Archaeological/ Cultural Institutions in furthering the cause of social, political and economic context of archaeology. It offers interaction in Archaeology and Applied Sciences and provides leadership in curriculum planning. It develops training programmes both for in-service professionals and pre-service connoisseurs.

For the purpose Scientific analyses of the excavates sample for carrying out basics researches in the field of archaeology ,Pt Dendayal Upadhaya IOA collaborates with the following institutions –Deccan College,Pune ,National Remotes Sensing Agency,Hyderabad,indian institute of remote Sensing, Dehradun, Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeobotany, Lucknow and Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad.
The mode of selection to this course is direct through advertisement. The admission notice is issued in the Employment News in the first/ second week of June and last date for receipt of application is third/fourth week of July. The scrutiny of application and preparation of merit list is done immediately and eligible candidates are called as per the merit for written test followed by viva in the second/ third week of August/September each year. The application belonging to SC/ST category are given return second class rail/ bus fare by the shortest route from this place of their residence/duty to Delhi. The applicants working in Central/State Governments and universities are required to route their applications through prescribed channels. On the basis of written and oral examination final selection of 15 candidates is made.
The Qualifications for admission are Master’s degree in Ancient or Medieval Indian History/Archaeology/Anthropology from a recognized University or equivalent including Indian classical languages such as Sanskrit, Pali, Prakrit, Arabic or Persian or Geology with knowledge of Pleiatocene age with a minimum of 55% marks in aggregate, relaxable by 5% in case of SC/ST/OBC candidates and candidates working in the Archaeological organization, Central/State Government and university Departments.
